Vinyasa flow is a type of yoga where movement is synchronized with the breath. The teacher instructs each breath (inhales and exhales) to guide the student to flow from one pose to the next. This creates a rather dance like movement due to the way the poses flow together smoothly. Poses are held for varying lengths, but not usually for extended periods of time. Focus is on bringing awareness to breath, dynamic movement, building heat and proper alignment to bring the student into a meditative flow allowing for stillness of the mind.
Yin Yoga focuses more on holding poses for extended periods of time (1 to 20 minutes). This allows for targeting of the connective tissues (rather than muscles), such as ligaments, bones and joints of the body which are not normally exercised in a more active style of yoga. Yin yoga is a perfect compliment to a more dynamic flow based class.
